Distance Legends®

In the 1960’s American distance running was at a peak. Two gold medals were won in Tokyo and many World records were set. The purpose of this site is to inspire young athletes to get away from video games and T.V. and to get active and re-kindle this era of athletic success.

In October of 1964 I won the Olympic 5000 meter race in Tokyo and Bill Dellinger won a bronze medal. Billy Mills shocked the running World by winning a gold medal in the 10,000 meters.

Jim Ryun competed at those same Olympics along with Gerry Lindgren as high school athletes.

Jim Ryun went on to set World records and win a silver medal at the 1968 Olympics. This was indeed the golden era of AMERICAN distance running.

The purpose of DISTANCE  LEGENDS is to bring back some of America’s greatest runners from the past to share what it took for them to be successful. It is my hope that this will bring about a new renaissance in distance running and in the process get young people more active and handle some of the obesity and health issues affecting our young people.
